Greyhound Bar Cup
St. Brendan’s Park FC 2 Tralee Celtic 1
(By Christy Leahy)
The early chances fell to Billy Stack who was full of running and confidence and his first shot was over the bar but his second effort brought a fine save out of Moriarty at his near post. Park responded with a sweeping move that involved Chris O‘Sullivan and Pa McCarthy who fed the ball to Fergal Maunsell but his shot was too high. Hegarty got a vital touch to an excellent free by Shane Brosnan that looked destined for the top corner in the 20th but for the intervention of the keeper. Tralee Celtic were in front a minute later when Doyle misjudged the flight of the ball and Fiachra Dunne availed of the opportunity to score. The held the lead for six minutes when a bit of wizardry from Fergal Maunsell unhinged a stubborn defence before crossing to the danger area where Con Barret scored despite the close attentions of David Moore.
Tommy Moriarty made a superb save at the bottom of his right hand post in the 55th minute, from an excellent David Moore header, and his clearance was picked up by Maunsell whose shot hit the upright but fell to the feet of Pa McCarthy who buried the ball in the net.. It was backs to the wall defending by the home side for the remainder of the game as Tralee Celtic went ravaging for a goal. They were denied by an excellent defence who showed just one moment of weakness when Moriarty left the ball bounce in the goal mouth and he was extremely lucky to punch the ball off Adam Moore’s head.
