Killarney Celtic 1 Athletico Ardfert 0
(By Christy Leahy)
Killarney Celtic became Denny Division 1B Champions on Friday 20th May when they defeated Athletico Ardfert after a tense game in KDL headquarters at Mounthawk Park. Jo Jo Fleming was wide of the target with an early chance for the winners and Athleticos first effort on goal came from a short corner taken by Daniel Dowling that was driven over the bar by Mike Moloney. Kevin Breen and Robert Watson then set up a chance, after nineteen minutes, that was wasted by the usually reliable Fleming. Watson then created a chance for Stephen Devane but his effort was easily saved by Mickey O’Sullivan. On the half hour Tom Moloney took on the Celtic defence and forced Paudie Murphy into conceding a corner and this was followd by a good Celtic move that finished with Stephen Devane header hitting the cross bar.
The only goal of the game goal came in the 60th minute when Celtic attacked with Watson pushing the ball wide to Devane who scored from a very narrow angle. The introduction of Tom Templeman added more life to the game because of his lightning speed. Alex Schober pulled a dipping shot by Tom Moloney from under the cross bar in the dying minutes and Celtic were deserving champions.
