League of Ireland A Championship
Tralee Dynamos 1 St. Patrick’s Athletic 0
(By Christy Leahy)
When Dynamos were beaten 4-0 by Waterford United in midweek we all feared the worst for the A Championship season but, once again, Dynamos astounded us all. Gone was the uncertainty that appeared to run throughout the team on Wednesday night and it was replaced with a confidence that saw them take on the visitors from the start. The inclusion of Brian Fitzgerald and David Conway in the starting line-up gave the home side the balance they needed and they created the first chance of the game in the 10th minute. Eight minutes before the break Dynamos took the lead when Fitzgerald got on the end of an Aaron Houlihan free to head the ball to the net at the back post.
St. Patrick’s Athletic, with the aid of a strong wind, piled on the pressure in the second half but Dynamos defended well and created several chances of their own. Kevin McCarthy headed one effort off the line and Audi Dunlea cleared one at the back post but it was to be Dynamos day in the sun.
